Brief explanation Hubert Humphrey Fellowships in USA for International Students:

The Humphrey Fellowship Program is designed for experienced professionals who want to improve their leadership skills by exchanging knowledge and understanding about issues of common concern in the United States and Fellows’ home countries.

Institution(s) hosting:

Fellows are assigned to one of the participating universities in the United States. Fellows cannot select which university they will attend. Rather, they are assigned to the most appropriate host institution in groups of 7-15 based on their area of interest and professional field.

Level/subject of study:

The Fellowship, as a non-degree program, provides valuable opportunities for professional development through selected university courses, conference attendance, networking, and practical work experiences. The following program fields are eligible:

• Agricultural and Rural Development • Communications/Journalism • Economic Development • Educational Administration, Planning, and Policy • Finance and Banking • Higher Education Administration • HIV/AIDS Policy and Prevention • Human Resource Management • Law and Human Rights • Natural Resources, Environmental Policy, and Climate Change

The number of awards is: Each year, approximately 200 Fellowships are awarded.

Group to target: Citizens of Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Eurasia, the Middle East and North Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, South and Central Asia, and the Western Hemisphere are eligible.

 

Scholarship worth and inclusions:

The Fellowship provides for the following:

• Tuition and fees at the assigned host university; • Pre-academic English language training, if necessary; • A maintenance (living) allowance, which includes a one-time settling-in allowance;
• Accident and sickness insurance; • a stipend for books; • a one-time computer subsidy;
• Air travel (both international and domestic travel to and from the United States for the program);

• A Professional Development allowance for professional activities such as field trips, professional visits, and conferences.

Eligibility for Hubert Humphrey Fellowships in USA for International Students:

The applicant must possess:

• A bachelor’s degree (first university), • a minimum of five years of full-time professional experience
• Limited or no prior experience in the United States;

• Demonstrated leadership qualities;

• A record of community service; and

• English language ability

Instructions for use:

Application deadlines vary by country but generally fall between May and September each year. The nominating US Embassy or Binational Fulbright Commission will notify you of its internal application deadline. By October 1st, Embassies and Commissions must submit their nominations to the Institute of International Education office in Washington, DC.
